Spruce Mountain High School girls’ basketball coach Gavin Kane, who won a combined seven state championships at Dirigo and Rangeley ancd has nearly 500 career victories, has been named to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.

Kane will be inducted Saturday, June 22, joining other honorees representing a variety of categories including coaches, players, teams and special contributors in a ceremony at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass.

While at Dirigo, Kane’s teams won a state record 11 consecutive Class C regional championships from 1995 to 2005.

His career record is 483-98.

Dirigo compiled a 40-3 tournament record at Augusta Civic Center during Kane’s tenure, winning 12 consecutive Mountain Valley Conference championships and posting a 136-game league winning streak.

Kane has been recognized numerous times by his peers with Maine Association of Basketball Coaches and MVC Coach of the Year Awards.

He earned his first state title in 1989 with the Class D Rangeley boys.

In addition to high school coaching, Kane led 6 boys’ AAU state championship Teams. He spent two years as a men’s assistant at the University of Maine at Farmington and two seasons as a Division I women’s assistant at the University of Maine in Orono.

Kane has coached 4 Mr. or Miss Maine Basketball Finalists, including Mr. Maine Basketball recipient and Gatorade Player of the Year, Tom Knight, currently a starter at Notre Dame. Many of his former athletes played at the collegiate level and have continued in the coaching profession.

The June 22 event will include a series of afternoon panel discussions featuring a number of former NBA and WNBA players who will be inducted that evening.

As much reunion as ceremony, the event has become one of the largest sports dinners in America. More than 1,600 people attended the 2012 gathering, and this year’s engagement is expected to sell out.
