1934 – 2013

AUBURN — Harry W. Carter, 79, a resident of Church Street, Livermore, passed away Saturday, May 11, at Androscoggin Hospice House.

He was born April 24, 1934, in Montpelier, Vt., the son of Sumner Carter and Jessie (Robertson) Carter. His family moved to Maine and he attended school in Penobscot County. Following high school, Harry joined the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. Upon returning from the service, he returned to school at Husson College in Bangor and then earned his master’s in education through the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

On Aug. 6, 1960, in Bangor, he married his wife of 52 years, Marni Pulkkinen.

He taught school in New York for seven years and then in Quincy, Mass., for more than 35 years; he also had the opportunity to teach in Spain before retiring. He was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, National Teachers Association, and Rotary in Scituate, Mass., having served as past president.

Harry enjoyed traveling with his wife, and for several years they wintered in Clearwater, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Marni Carter of Livermore; daughters, Dr. Peggy Gerow; Carmen Simmons and her husband, Robert, of Albuquerque, N.M.; and Susan Dunham of Brunswick; four grandchildren, Joshua Weldon, Thomas Dunham Jr., Hayley Carter Dunham and Mitchell Dunham; and many nieces and nephews.
