PARIS — On Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m. the Paris Cape Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 77 High St. After a brief business meeting Ben Conant will speak on the Parker House in Boston.
If you have ever tasted the delicious Parker House rolls or visited the famous Omni Parker House in Boston, you have experienced a bit of the hospitality of Harvey Parker (1805 – 1884). In his early years he came from Paris, Maine. Although not a native of Paris, he lived with his parents in the Bisco District of town.
He was born in Temple and went on to make a name for himself in Boston. Even today there is a landmark in the old section of the city. In 1825 he purchased a portion of land, razed the buildings there and later erected the Parker House (one of 1854-55 and later of 1927). It is the oldest continuous hotel and restaurant in the country.
More famous people – past-presidents, literary notables, famous foreigners, actors and sportsmen – have stayed there in the last 160-plus years.
The society has recently made contact with an author of Cambridge, Mass., who is currently working on a biography due out in 2014. Parker’s interesting life will be revealed.
The public is welcome to the meeting, after which refreshments will be served.
