DIXFIELD — The RSU 10 board on Monday appointed an interim superintendent to bridge the gap between the time Superintendent Tom Ward leaves for RSU 9 in Farmington and a new superintendent is hired.

Richard Abramson of Arundel is a retired school superintendent who has served in the districts of Arundel, Wells-Ogunquit and, most recently, RSU 38 in Readfield, from which he retired last year after leading the district for 11 years.

He has also served as a director of special services in Richmond and earned degrees from Colby College and the University of Maine.

Abramson will begin his duties in late June and work two days a week during the summer.

Ward said a superintendent during this interim period is most needed to take care of district paperwork.

After the summer, if a new permanent superintendent is not in place, Abramson will serve RSU 10 on an as-needed basis.

Abramson will be paid just under $400 a day.

The Superintendent Search Committee is currently reviewing applications and will know whether they will interview any of the applicants next week. This is the second time the committee has sought applications for the position. None of the first-time applicants fit the characteristics wanted.

The board also appointed a new athletic director/assistant principal for Dirigo High School in Dixfield.

Stephen Ouellette of Jay was appointed to fill the position that will be vacated at the end of the year by Chris Moreau, who has resigned to take another position in Florida.

Ouellette has most recently served as athletic director/assistant principal at Gardiner High School.

Ward said his salary will be $79,000 annually.

The board accepted the resignations of two special education teachers, effective at the end of the school year: Rose Osborn at Mountain Valley Middle School and Debbie Smith at Rumford Elementary School. Both are retiring.

Other resignations include three staff members from the district’s after-school program. Longtime Buckfield Junior-Senior High School site coordinators, teachers Annette Caldwell and Gretchen Kimball, and Dirigo Middle School site coordinator Kim Bailey will end these duties in August.
