DEAR SUN SPOTS: Kudos to Mark LaFlamme for his article on Norlands living history museum (May 5). It was very interesting and informative from start to finish.

Is there a place in L-A that recharges fire extinguishers? If not, can they be recycled? Thanks for a great column. — B.G., Turner

ANSWER: Sun Spots also enjoyed the Norlands story. She has been to visit several times; it’s a great place to take out-of-town visitors and family. The oldsters appreciate the history, and the youngsters like the schoolroom and animals.

As for fire extinguishers, yes, there are two local places for that service.

* AAA Fire Extinguisher, 328 Rodman Road, Auburn, 784-8306, offers walk-in inspections for $5.25 as well as refilling services.

* Firesafe Equipment Co., 159 First Flight Drive, Auburn, 784-7525, also tests extinguishers ($4.50) and will refill them (prices vary, as with AAA)

Sun Spots had reason to visit Firesafe this winter, after she carelessly set the woodshed on fire (the woodshed is attached to the cabin, so it was a close call), and Mr. Sun Spots had to brandish the extinguishers on hand, as well as the garden hose, to put it out.

At Firesafe she discovered that the small, inexpensive extinguishers that you buy in a home improvement or discount store are usually disposable. Another extinguisher was from a defunct company, and parts were not available.

The technician at Firesafe asked Sun Spots about her situation and recommended three 10-pound units at $80.33 each, including tax. Still shaky from her experience, Sun Spots handed over the cash without hesitation.

These extinguishers can be refilled and should be checked annually to make sure they are operating properly.

Firesafe took her old extinguishers and disposed of them properly.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I would like to thank everyone on behalf of Waterford Grange 479 for the materials sent in response to our request for craft supplies. Our talented workers have been busy knitting, sewing and crocheting, and completing projects for our craft sale at the North Waterford Fair in July.

All money raised will go toward making needed improvements to our Grange building, including reinstalling running water. We hope to update from a hand pump to an electric one, which will enable us to modernize our bathroom facilities.

We are still in need of materials for our crafts, as well as shelves or bookcases to store materials. You may call Marjorie Kimball in North Waterford at 583-4408, Sharon McAllister in Stoneham at 928-2878 or me. — Mary DeLorenzo, Waterford, 583-4490, egcellent@oxfordnetworks.net
