1925 – 2013

AUBURN —   George M. Brainerd Jr. passed away Saturday, May 18, with his loving family at his side.

He was born in Clinton, Mass., on Dec. 2, 1925, a son of the late George M. Brainerd Sr. and Mary Ellen (Rubery) Brainerd. He later moved to Maine and attended Auburn schools. He was a graduate of Edward Little High School, Class of 1944. He joined the Army right out of high school and served under General George Patton in World War II. He also graduated from Auburn Maine School of Commerce.

George worked at the Bates Mill from the age of 16 and returned there when he returned from the war. On April 17, 1954, George married Mildred Libby and they were able to celebrate their 59th anniversary this year. He was a member of Ancient Brothers Lodge No. 178, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Maine Consistory Valley of Portland, 32nd Degree and the Kora Shrine.

He loved to take his grandchildren fishing and following them through the years at all their sporting events. He loved to do woodworking and was an avid fan of the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics.

George is survived by his wife, Mildred L. Brainerd of Auburn; his three daughters, Judith Cormier and husband, Ron, of Lewiston, Joanne Dubois of Madison and Jill Davis and husband, Jim, of Minot; and special niece, Elaine Brewer and husband, Ken. He also leaves behind his brother, Irving; as well as eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Milton and Robert; and two sisters, Audrey Gould and Mary Ellen Biatek.
