CANTON — Selectmen were asked Thursday night to hold a discussion at the annual town meeting on the sale and use of town properties.

Chris Dailey of the Land Use Committee made the request, but the board made no decision.

The committee was formed last year to take inventory of town property and buildings, and make recommendations about their sale or use. Current recommendations, Dailey said, are:

* Sell the old fire station/community hall on School Street.

* Renovate the current fire station on Route 108 into a Town Office.

* Sell the current Town Office on Staples Hill Road.

* Sell the municipal building on Cross Street.

* Buy a Maine Department of Transportation facility on Jewett Hill Road and use its salt shed and garage.

* Sell the Village Ridge Development to a developer.

Dailey said there needs to be a discussion about these issues at the annual town meeting June 15.

Dailey said the Town Office should move to the fire station, but Selectman Lisa Cummings told him it would cost money and there’s none in the budget.

Dailey said all he wanted was an open discussion at the annual meeting and have it listed on the warrant.

There was no resolution to his request.

The board did resolve to have town Administrative Assistant Harry Childs contact the MDOT to request an inspection of Tessier Road and advise how to resolve issues over its condition and maintenance. Parts of it are in Canton, Jay and Livermore Falls. Jay had been plowing Canton’s section, but stopped because the road is so bad it’s tearing up their equipment.

Childs reported the town had to give a year’s notice to drop its current waste contract. The board voted to hire Archie’s Inc. of Mexico for $34,320 a year for three years when the current contract expires.

Diane Ray reported that the community garden is progressing and already has 10 families using plots. She also presented an idea for a yearlong Lake Anasagunticook celebration with Hartford. The lake is in both towns. She promised the board a calendar by the next meeting.

The town needs election clerks and those interested are asked to contact the town office for more information.

The Parks and Recreation Committee is having a plant sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Heritage Park on Route 108. To donate plants call Tom Adley at 597-2168.
