RANGELEY — The School Board unanimously voted Tuesday to hire Charles Brown as the new K-8 principal at Rangeley Lakes Regional School. His two-year term begins July 1.

Superintendent Brian Foster introduced Brown, and said he had successfully passed interviews and reference checks.0

Lynn Richards-Pollack, the school’s technology director, gave a detailed presentation in favor of leasing iPads for school use for the next four years. She noted that all services are insured against damage by the Maine Learning Technology Initiative. Since the amount of $18,150 was included for this purpose in the new budget, the board voted to lease Apple iPads.

The school’s new emergency management plan was introduced, though fire Chief Tim Pellerin was unable to attend. An overview of the plan will be presented to the public at a later date, though details will remain confidential. Training and drills will begin when school starts next fall.

Foster said there was a surprise health inspection of the school’s kitchen, which was found to be in compliance.

Principal Sherry Connally requested that the last day of school, June 14, be the customary half day, which was approved. Graduation will be at 3 p.m. June 8.

Spanish teacher Kate Philbrick presented a PowerPoint titled “From Maine to Spain” that detailed her students’ exchange trip to Spain with colorful photographs and graphics containing the students’ reactions to the experience. The nine students were in Spain for two weeks in April. Philbrick said she would like to organize a trip every other year, and is thinking of a service trip to Latin America for 2015.

Board Chairwoman Pam Ellis presented a letter of thanks to the board’s student member, graduating senior Gabrielle Cavalier, for her participation on the board for the past two years. Board member Ginny Nuttall presented a colorfully wrapped present to outgoing Superintendent Foster for his years of service.
