LISBON — The Lamp nursing home at 64 Lisbon St. is marking 50 years of operation.

It opened May 30, 1963, and was licensed for 25 nursing home residents. It was the first one-level nursing home facility in the Androscoggin area.

Shirley Quinlan, RN, administrator of the nursing home, along with family friend Irene Lamarche, RN, worked many long hours overseeing the facility through its rough beginnings. As the years passed, many changes occurred and regulations changed. The advent of Medicare brought many new facilities.

In 1995, The Lamp converted to residential care, specializing in the care of patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

Quinlan, CEO, and Lillian Karkos, administrator, now report a staff of 39 employees, many of whom have been with The Lamp for 15 or more years. Each staff member, no matter what their position, must have Alzheimer’s training so they are aware of each patient’s needs.
