AUBURN — A late-night fire forced a family out of its Goff Street home, but no one was hurt and fire crews saved the rest of the building.

A witness said flames began shooting out of a second-story apartment at 65 Goff St. at about 11:30 p.m. Several people scurried to safety and huddled in a corner as firefighters responded.

“Flames were coming right out of there, but they got on it fast and poured a lot of water on it,” said a man who lives near the building that burned. “They got it down real quick.”

The apartment house is listed as both 65 and 67 Goff St. Damage reportedly was limited to the upper floor at 65 Goff St.

Police blocked off a stretch of Goff Street between School and Pine streets while fire crews battled the flames. The fire was under control within minutes of their arrival. By early Thursday, investigators were waiting to enter the apartment to search for a cause.
