PORTLAND (AP) — Cumberland County Jail officials are investigating a jailhouse fight that escalated into a brawl and ended with a corrections officer requiring stitches after being punched in the mouth.

Authorities say a fight broke out last Thursday morning between two inmates over magazines in a medium-security housing unit.

When officers arrived, they found several fights in progress involving eight to 10 inmates. During the melee, an inmate punched Officer Tyrone Leslie in the mouth.

Officials say the investigation is continuing, and they expect to seek charges against the inmate who injured the officer.
