AUGUSTA — Maine lawmakers are expected to take up a bond package this week amid their work to finalize the state budget.

The Appropriations Committee will hear testimony Wednesday on hundreds of millions of dollars in proposed bonds. Many of the bonds are redundant, so the total doesn’t reflect what may be seriously considered when the bonds come up for votes.

Among the proposals are bonds to improve highways and bridges and buy classroom equipment for Maine’s community colleges.

Any approved bonds would come on top of $105 million in bonds that have already been authorized by lawmakers and voters but have not yet been issued. Republican Gov. Paul LePage has said he will issue some of the bonds after lawmakers pay Maine hospitals a $484 million debt for unpaid Medicaid services.
