AUGUSTA — Maine state Sen. Emily Cain, D-Orono, says she plans to run for Congress to fill the seat currently held Democratic U.S. Rep Mike Michaud.

The Democrat from Orono said in a statement Friday that she has filed paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission and is taking the first steps at establishing a formal campaign organization.

She plans to officially launch her campaign for the 2nd Congressional District seat later this year.

Michaud announced Thursday that he’s raising money and forming an exploratory committee to possibly challenge Republican Gov. Paul LePage.

The district covers most of Maine, other than a swath along the southern coast. Although it’s often considered to be the more conservative part of Maine, voters are known to be independent and to split votes between parties.
