AUBURN — Fred Leavitt Riley of Auburn, 94, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, Jan. 9, at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice in Auburn.

Mr. Riley was born in Lewiston, March 23, 1918, the son of John and Madge Leavitt Riley. He was a graduate of Lewiston High School and Bates College, Class of 1939. Following graduation from Bates, he was employed as a chemist by the DuPont Chemical Co. at several munitions facilities throughout the south for the duration of World War II.

Shortly after the war, Fred started a career with the Brown Paper Co., where he eventually became the general superintendent of their mill in Berlin, N.H. He retired in 1973. Fred enjoyed several hobbies throughout his life, including golf, skiing, pen and ink drawing and working on challenges related to statistics and advanced math. He was an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lewiston.

Mr. Riley is survived by a niece, Susan Robichaud and husband, David, of Dixmont; his nephew, John Stass and wife, Paula, of Lewiston; and a grandniece, Laurie Mower and husband, Michael, of Ripley.
