PORTLAND (AP) — A coalition of diverse groups is launching a campaign to raise public awareness about pollution they say is threatening Maine’s lobster population.
The Maine Lobster Council, Ready Seafood Co., the Maine Restaurant Association, the University of Maine’s Darling Marine Center and the Natural Resources Council of Maine are holding a press conference Tuesday to announce the campaign.
They say that carbon pollution from cars, power plants and elsewhere is warming and acidifying ocean waters, posing a threat to the Gulf of Maine lobster population.
Lobster by far is Maine’s most valuable fishery. Lobstermen last year caught a record 126 million pounds valued at $339 million to fishermen.
