PORTLAND — Ashley L. Smith, 84, of Portland, passed away on Monday, July 1.

He was born in Bangor, Aug. 28, 1928, a son of the late Bruce and Viola (McGlinchy) Smith. His grandfather, Ashley Auburn Smith was a minister and judge in Bangor. Ashley enlisted in the Army in 1946. After serving in the Army, he was employed by Eith’s Bakery in Auburn. He and his wife, Gloria later moved to Portland, where he worked at the Barron Center, before going to work at Maine Medical Center for 31 years. He and his wife of 65 years raised 11 children.

He is survived by his brother, Richard Smith; sisters, Bertha Smith, Mary Ellen Rose and Ann Morris; his children, Robert Smith and his wife, Carol, George Smith and his wife, Cindy, Thomas Smith and his wife, Carolyn and Edward Smith; his daughters, Gloria (Smith) Ouelette and her husband, Gil, Judith Smith and her significant other, Edward “Ted” Wright, Diana (Smith) Lampron and her husband, Robert, Mary (Smith) Burrill and her husband, Robert and Catherine (Smith) Waterman and her husband, Peter; as well as his 23 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Ashley was predeceased by his wife, Gloria (Gagne) Smith; his sister, Marilyn; brother, Bruce; and his two children, Ashley “Joey” Smith and Susan M. (Smith) Seavey.
