AUBURN — Kaelina Perron was named the 12th recipient of the Larry Marczak Memorial Scholarship at Edward Little Class Night held on May 29. Thomas Marczak presented Perron with a $2,000 check. Along with the previous recipients, her name is engraved on a plaque that hangs in the school’s main office. A graduate of the class of 2013, Perron will attend University of Maine at Orono, majoring in psychology.

Applicants were asked to provide a list of activities and achievements as well as two recommendation letters. They were also asked to write an essay explaining how they had made a difference in someone’s life or in the community during their high school years. Perron wrote about a classmate her family adopted after he shared the details of his unfortunate home life. She became his friend, discussing topics from basketball to school work with him. She helped him improve his grades by tutoring him. If he was having trouble with a project, she encouraged him. His attitude changed so remarkably that he was able to turn his academic career around and will become the first person in his family to graduate from high school and go to college.

Her teachers praised Perron saying that she was motivated by a challenge. Despite being fifth in her class, she put many hours into preparing for her classes.

Perron was also described as a resourceful and independent scholar as well as a leader in the classroom. She served on the Executive board of the Class of 2013 as vice-president. As a two sport athlete, Perron earned varsity letters in both lacrosse and field hockey.
