TURNER — Leavitt Area High School graduate Justin A.C. Bean has been awarded a $1,000 Banking on the Future Scholarship from Mechanics Savings Bank. He is the son of Rhonda Bean.

Justin played golf for Leavitt Area High School for four years and was named co-captain of his team during his junior and senior years. He was a member of the cross-country ski team, Latin Club and Key Club. Justin was involved with his high school’s Project Graduation auction, the Homecoming float and Winter Carnival air band.

Justin has been an honors student for four years and was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2013. He is a recipient of the 2012 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award.

He is hands-on in his community and helps neighbors shovel driveways, mow lawns and rake yards and serves as a farmhand at a local horse farm on Sundays. He has volunteered his time to local blood drives, golf tournament fund-raisers and a bottle drive to support a cancer patient. He also volunteered as a teacher’s helper at Turner Primary School.

He has been employed by Schrep’s Corner Store in Turner and Turner Highlands Golf Course, where he worked in the pro-shop and Fore Seasons Restaurant.

This fall Justin will attend the University of Maine at Orono and pursue a master’s degree in secondary education, with a focus in Latin. His career goal is to become a high school Latin teacher.

For more than 20 years, Mechanics Savings Bank has provided scholarships to assist high school seniors bound for college or technical school with their higher education goals. This year, the Banking on the Future Scholarship program awarded $17,000 to students from local high schools, including Edward Little, Lewiston, Saint Dominic, Leavitt, Lisbon, Monmouth, Oak Hill, Poland, Gray/New Gloucester, Brunswick and Windham.
