1926 – 2013

SOUTH PARIS — Joseph Vincent Brown Jr., 86, of Minot, passed away on Wednesday, July 10, at the Maine Veterans Home.

He was born in Lewiston on Aug. 4, 1926, a son of Vincent and Ethel Brown. He attended Edward Little High School in Auburn and enlisted in the U. S. Navy on Aug. 26, 1943. During World War II, he served on the USS Wasp as an aviation mechanic and was honorably discharged in April of 1946. He married Marilyn Peck on June 8, 1946, and raised four children.

Joe was employed for many years with H.P. Hood and Sons and later went into business with Richard Gatchell of Auburn, forming H.L. Gatchell. He eventually started his own company — Brown and Sons Home Heating Oil, a Sunoco gas station on Center Street in Auburn, as well as a firewood business at his home in Minot. His last job was as a bus driver for Minot Consolidated School.

He was a member of Kora Shrine Temple for almost 40 years and a long-time member of the Kora Patrol.

Joseph is survived by his son, Joseph W. Brown and partner, Cathy Dixon; daughter, Sandra Piper and husband, Steven; daughter, Susan Morin; son, William Brown; grandchildren, Daniel Brown and wife, Wendy, Kelly Henry and husband, Cris, James Piper and wife, Kristin, Jason Piper and wife, Jill, Nicholas Piper and wife, Syrena, Jennifer Piper and partner, John Vickery, and Scott Dixon; ten great-grandchildren, Ashley Hawkins, Amber Henderson, Daniel Millett, Ethan Brown, Austin Brown, Oliver Brown, Emily Piper, Callum Piper, Kali Dixon and Blaine Dixon; and two new great-great-grandsons, Ben Hawkins and Carter Henderson.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn; grandson, Shane Dixon; and his parents, Vincent and Ethel Brown.
