HANCOCK — A local woman crashed her car Thursday while reaching for a cookie that was located in the vehicle’s passenger seat, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputy Jacob Day said the 61-year-old woman was driving a 2002 Subaru Forester east on Route 1 in Hancock when the accident occurred a few minutes after 9:30 a.m. She lost control of the car “when she went to grab a cookie in her passenger seat,” Day wrote in an incident summary.
The driver had a package of chocolate, mint-flavored cookies with her in the car, the deputy said, but he wasn’t sure of the brand.
The car drifted into the westbound lane, prompting the woman to overcorrect by sharply steering back to the right, Day indicated. The vehicle went down the embankment on the eastbound side of the road and struck several trees, causing more than $1,000 worth of damage to its underside and front end, he said.
Day said the woman was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. No charges are expected in the accident, he said.
