PORTLAND (AP) — The trial of a Scarborough man charged with assaulting a woman on a Portland street and leaving her with permanent brain injuries is getting started.

Jury selection in the trial of 28-year-old Eric Gwaro was completed Monday and opening statements are expected Tuesday.

The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/13zTPoT ) reported that Gwaro has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault, aggravated assault and violation of conditions of release in connection with the attack last August on a 25-year-old woman.

Authorities said the woman was left in a coma, and although she has recovered partially, she is not expected to fully recover.

Prosecutors said Gwaro was caught on store surveillance video dragging the woman.

Gwaro has said he was chasing the attacker.
