RUMFORD — Black Mountain will host a 5K fun run and walk at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at Hosmer Field to raise money for the recreation facility.

The fun run, which is called Hit the Track for Black, will begin at 8 a.m., with registration opening at 7 a.m. Entry fee is $25, and all ages are welcome to participate.

Resident Marie Gauvin said the 5K run was the brainchild of her 14-year-old son, Curtis, and fellow skiers Avery and Riley Sevigny. All three children wanted to do something for the mountain after learning it did not get funds from the town this year, Gauvin said.

“We were driving, and from the backseat, he told me, ‘Mom, I’m depressed,’” Gauvin said, “and I told him, ‘Don’t worry, things will work out.’ Shortly after, he asked if I would help him out if he started a 5K. I told him, ‘Of course.’”

Gauvin, who has planned several 5K runs, said 204 people have registered so far, with 60 to 70 registrants from out of town or out of state.

“That’s a really great number for us,” Gauvin said. “I’ve seen people from Old Orchard Beach, Gorham and Augusta signing up. It’s amazing.”

In addition to the 5K race on Saturday, Black Mountain also announced a series of events to help reach its $200,000 goal.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, the ski teams at Dirigo and Mountain Valley high schools and Mountain Valley Middle School will hold a bottle drive. According to a recent news release by Black Mountain, the ski teams are asking residents to save their bottles and on Sept. 7 the teams will pick them up.

The release also said “you can also deposit bottles yourself at the Waldo Street Bottle Depot in Rumford, or the Mexico Bottle Depot on Route 2 near Rowe’s Ice Cream, by just mentioning the Friends of Black Mountain.”

There will also be a live auction at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13 at Black Mountain, led by auctioneer Mike Brennick.

According to Black Mountain’s GoFundMe Web page, $34,914 has been raised by 199 people in the past month.
