PORTLAND — Maine’s transportation commissioner says the state will make sure that railroad lines remain operating during bankruptcy proceedings for the railway whose runaway oil train devastated a small town in Canada.

David Bernhardt said Thursday that three railroads that operate in Maine have been contacted to see if they’d be interested in operating the lines now owned by Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Wednesday.

Bernhardt said the state has filed documents in bankruptcy court to represent the public interest during the proceedings.

Montreal, Maine & Atlantic lawyers made their first appearance in bankruptcy court on Thursday.

An unattended MMA train carrying crude oil derailed on July 6 in Lac-Megantic, Quebec, setting off massive explosions that destroyed much of downtown and killed 47 people.
