PORTLAND (AP) — The head of a Portland charter school vows to open as scheduled in three weeks even though the building has failed inspection.

Citing a half-dozen building code violations, city building inspectors have refused to issue a certificate of occupancy to 54 York St., the home of Baxter Academy for Technology and Science scheduled to open Sept. 4 with 135 high school age students.

Executive Director Carl Stasio said most of the problems are relatively minor and easy to fix. He says there’s “no question” the school will open on time.

The inspection report did not go into detail.

The school has been roiled in controversy. Its founder and original executive director was fired over allegations of financial mismanagement. The firing led to lawsuits, which have since been resolved.
