Durham’s “wild man” made the night lively for residents near the Bend, Thursday evening, throwing several households into terror by his peculiar actions, tho but one person saw his shadow, so elusive was he at his mischief. His bare footprints, however, have been found around several buildings this morning, where his presence had been known the night before, and has disposed of any supposition that the imagination of the people visited was too highly wrought up or responsible for the excitement. The “wild man” was first heard about eight o’clock by the folks in the house of M.W. Eveleth. Windows were rattled there, and at two nearby farms, during the night. Friday morning there was an early consultation of the neighbors and it was then that the investigators found the bare footprints in the sand near these house and traced them back and forth. According to the story, those footprints tell the man must be fairly mature, having feet that measure 11 inches each. These also indicate that he toes in considerably with his right foot.
Searchers discovered skins of cucumbers and apples where he had eaten the vegetable and fruit stolen from some of the farms visited. There also was found an old tin can in which milk had been put within few hours previous. From this it is though that the “wild man” must have found access to some cows during the night.
