LIVERMORE FALLS — Residents of the three towns that comprise RSU 73 will have a chance next week to share in a school-opening barbecue and tour of Spruce Mountain High School.

At Thursday’s board meeting, it was announced that all are invited to take part in the barbecue and check out all the changes that have been made in the school and the adjacent Spruce Mountain Middle School and Jay Community Center.

The event begins at 4:30 p.m., Aug. 28, at the Jay campus.

SMHS Principal T.J. Plourde said letters are being sent out to parents, students and others, but anyone is welcome to attend.

Contractors have been working at the site on the $1.8 million renovation project since just before the end of the 2012-13 school year. This will be the first year that all RSU 73 secondary students will attend classes at the same campus. The Livermore Falls high school campus closed at the end of the school year. Portions of it are being used by the Adult and Community Education Program and for other purposes.

A connector has been built between the high school and middle school for secondary students to use.

Board Chairwoman Denise Rodzen said another tour for Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls selectmen, fire departments and police departments may be held at a later date.

“We want to send an invitation to them so the facts they talk about at their (selectman) meetings will be accurate,” she said.

Also on Thursday, the board approved a new student handbook for Livermore Elementary School.

Among the changes is a requirement that all students who ride their bicycles to school wear helmets, disciplinary measures more in line with Jay Elementary School and an outline of new bus arrival and departure times.

LES Principal Robert Kahler said a new discipline program, known as Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, will be introduced this year that emphasizes the positive behaviors of children.

Cards acknowledging such behavior will be given to children when they do something to earn recognition. Once the “bucket” is filled with such cards, a special event will be held.

The board also accepted the resignation of Ivy Latendresse as administrative support assistant and appointed Stewart Wyman to the position at JES.

They also accepted the resignation of Phyllis Holt as an educational technician at LES.

Several other positions were filled.
