AUGUSTA — One of the summer’s busiest travel weekends proved to be the safest in three years, according to state police.

Only one person was killed on Maine highways during Labor Day weekend, marking the safest travel holiday weekend since 2010, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

The 2013 figures compare to seven deaths over Labor Day weekend last year and five in 2011. The highest number of Labor Day weekend fatalities recorded was 10 in 1986.

The state’s lone fatality occurred in Belfast in which Jayashree Kalmath, 61, of Camden was killed in a collision with a bus on Route 1.

The highway death toll for 2013 stands at 94, according to McCausland, compared with 113 at this time last summer.
