FARMINGTON — A Dixfield man pleaded guilty Friday to stabbing a Carthage man in the forearm with a screwdriver in April in a dispute over an unpaid bill.
Peter Gallant, 40, pleaded guilty in Franklin County Superior Court to a felony charge of aggravated assault.
If the case had gone to trial, the court would have heard testimony that Gallant had gone to a home on West Side Road in Carthage to collect money he was owed for doing electrical work in 2012. When the homeowner told him he did not have the money to pay him, Gallant became upset and left, Assistant District Attorney James Andrews said.
When Gallant came back with a screwdriver and tried to disconnect the power, the homeowner confronted him and tried to stop him. Testimony would show that a verbal dispute escalated to a physical dispute and Gallant ended up sticking the homeowner in the forearm with a screwdriver, Andrews said.
A Franklin County sheriff’s lieutenant said earlier this year that the unpaid bill was for $850.
Gallant was taken into custody Friday and will remain in jail until he appears in court at 1 p.m. Oct. 9. It is then expected that the court would be presented with an agreement to defer sentencing for 24 months. During that time, Gallant will be required to complete all tasks in the agreement.
