FORT KENT — A Fort Kent man was taken to Northern Maine Medical Center this morning after being hit by a garbage truck as he exited a popular eatery.
Kevin Pelletier, who is around 50 years old and lives on Pleasant Street, was leaving Doris’ Cafe on Market Street around 7:55 Friday morning when the accident occurred, according to Fort Kent Police Chief Kenneth Michaud.
While Pelletier was walking between the building and a parked car, a 2001 Volvo garbage truck operated by Kenneth Saucier, who is about 60, was entering the cafe’s driveway.
Michaud said Saucier told him he saw Pelletier between the car and building as he drove by, but that when he looked in his sideview mirror, he could no longer see him.
When Saucier got out to investigate, Michaud said, he discovered Pelletier lying on the driveway.
It appeared the truck’s front and rear tires ran over Pelletier’s left leg, causing multiple injuries, the police chief said.
Pelletier was transported by ambulance to NMMC. He was treated there and stabilized before being transported in fair condition by Crown Critical Care Transport to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, a spokesperson at NMMC said Friday afternoon.
The accident remains under investigation by the Fort Kent Police Department.
