POLAND SPRING — The Poland Spring Resort, golf course and other associated historic properties have been designated a historic district by the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation’s historic places considered worthy of preservation.

The designation was made last month. According to the Register of Historic Places, “a historic district possesses a significant concentration, linkage or continuity of sites, buildings, structures or objects united historically or aesthetically by plan or physical development.”

The Poland Spring property has more than two dozen buildings, structures, objects or sites that contribute to the nature of the property and its historical significance, including three hotels, 10 cottages, the golf course and other historic buildings.

Five buildings included in the district were already listed on the register, including the Maine State Building, which was originally constructed for the 1893 Worlds Fair in Chicago and brought to the resort the following year; the All Souls Chapel, which served as an interdenominational house of worship for staff and guests; the original spring house and bottling facility of famed Poland Spring water; and the Beach House, which is located on the shore of Middle Range Pond.

The three main entities that own facilities and property that fall within the more than 400-acre district include the nonprofit Poland Spring Preservation Society, Poland Spring Resort and Golf Course as well as Poland Spring Bottling Co.
