WINDSOR — One person is dead in a single-vehicle accident in Kennebec County on Wednesday morning, according to police.
The accident occurred in Windsor at the intersection of Routes 32 and 17 at approximately 4 a.m., Kennebec County Sheriff Randall Liberty said.
Liberty said the vehicle, believed to be a Chevy Blazer which had only one occupant, may have been traveling at a high speed when it struck a telephone pole before rolling over.
The driver, whose identity was not available, was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff said.
Chief Deputy Ryan Reardon said early Wednesday afternoon that the crash was unlike any other his department has investigated.
“The vehicle is burned in such a way that the VIN numbers were destroyed, and the [license] plates were melted,” Reardon explained. He also added that police couldn’t tell if the driver was male or female because of the vehicle burn.
The chief deputy said it’s unclear whether alcohol was a factor in the crash. Alcohol containers were discovered in the vehicle but were unopened.
The body and the vehicle have been taken to the office of the state medical examiner in Augusta.
Results of the victim’s autopsy weren’t available early Wednesday afternoon.
