MEXICO — A Rumford man is charged with leaving the scene of a crash on Swift River Road early Sunday morning, according to Lt. Roy Hodsdon of the Mexico Police Department.

Matthew Lloyd, 22, of Rumford was charged Sunday morning and given a date of Nov. 5 to appear in 11th District Court in Rumford.

Hodsdon said a Swift River Road resident reported at 2:58 a.m. Sunday that she heard the sound of tires squealing outside of her house.

“Upon arriving, the officers found a 2000 Volkswagen passenger car abandoned in the lawn of a Swift River Road resident,” Hodsdon said. “The car seemed to have gone off the road, where it hit a road sign, then came up over a bank onto the resident’s lawn and hit a cluster of three white birch trees.”

Hodsdon said Lloyd reported the accident several hours after the car was discovered.

The trees and lawn had substantial damage, according to Hodsdon.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
