YARMOUTH — Pet lovers from around southern Maine are invited to flock to Yarmouth for the opportunity to have their animal companions blessed outdoors in celebration of Saint Francis of Assisi’s Feast Day.

From dogs to gerbils to parakeets, all pets are welcome to attend the Blessing of the Animals at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, outside Sacred Heart Church, 326 Main St.

All are encouraged to participate, including those without an animal friend present. As prayers are offered, the pets are gently sprinkled with holy water.

Saint Francis of Assisi, whose feast day is Oct. 4, was known for his love of all of God’s creatures, calling animals “his brothers and sisters.”

The annual event is sponsored by the Church & Family Life Commission of the Parish of the Holy Eucharist, which includes Sacred Heart Church in Yarmouth, Holy Martyrs of North America Church in Falmouth, St. Gregory Church in Gray and St. Jude Church in Freeport.
