“Showdown looms on Syria in Senate” (Sept. 5) discussed the issue with Syrian President Bashar Assad’s use of chemical weapons against his own people, and the decisions and voting results of Congress and the opinions of different members of the U.S. Senate.

I believe that the U.S. military should not attack Syria with bombs, guns or any kind of lethal weapons, especially not without conversing with other nations and having more support about the decision. If President Barack Obama decided to attack Syria, even without consent from Congress, the U.S. could be facing another war.

I agree with U.S. Sen. Susan Collins that President Obama has left the U.S. in a “no-win” situation.

Why is it always necessary to take violent actions and extreme measures? Yes, using chemical weapons against one’s own citizens is very wrong, but to attack the country without much thought of the consequences beforehand is also dangerous and seems very irrational.

If leaders from the different countries would actually take time to discuss matters like that, I feel that the world in general would be much better off.
