WALDOBORO — A pickup truck smashed into the foyer of the local Hannaford supermarket early Tuesday morning in a failed attempt to steal money from an automated teller machine, according to local police.

The truck got stuck and the driver fled the scene.

Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde said that the investigation was just beginning but that the truck was impounded by police.

Police were called at 3:30 a.m. by a passing motorist on his way to work, the chief said, who reported that a truck had crashed into the store. Waldoboro police, assisted by Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Detective Terry Michaud, responded and found that someone had tried to remove the ATM but failed.

The chief said he has obtained surveillance camera footage from the store in an effort to identify the person or people involved.

Bob Hatem, Hannaford regional director of operations, said the store will reopen later today if the building is structurally safe to do so.
