What Maine political figure do you admire most?

Ed Muskie was an accomplished statesman, presidential candidate, U.S. Senator, U.S. Secretary of State, Maine Governor, Bates College graduate, and western Maine native. I admire him for his many accomplishments, most of all his authorship of the federal Clean Air and Clean Water Acts.

Local politics

What has Mayor Robert Macdonald done during the past two years that you agree with? What has he done that you disagree with?

I support the Mayor’s collaborative efforts with Lewiston’s landlord community and his work with the Police Department in prosecuting documented cases of welfare fraud. I do not agree with the Mayor’s past statements regarding Lewiston’s New Mainer community and their culture.

What has the city council done during the past two years that you agree with? What have they done that you disagree with?

I support the Council’s work in investing in the downtown, expanding the city’s acquisition and demolition program, adopting a “complete streets” policy, and trimming the city’s budget to maintain a flat tax rate (notwithstanding the state’s cuts to revenue sharing). I do not agree with the Council’s allowance of fireworks use within the city.

What has the city administrator and the city staff done during the past two years that you agree with? What have they done that you disagree with?

The city administrator and staff have done a good job of carrying out the policy decisions made by the council. For specific accomplishments, see above.

What has the school committee done during the past two years that you agree with? What have they done that you disagree with?

The school committee has done well in its future planning for increased enrollment. I was disappointed to see the re-districting effort fail.

What should be done with Bates Mill No. 5?

The best solution would be one conceived by the Grow LA group: securing private investment to stabilize the building while soliciting some much needed new businesses in the downtown; in particular, a downtown grocery store.
