FARMINGTON — A Franklin County grand jury has indicted a Waterville man accused of stealing $1,500 in merchandise from a local Walmart on Aug. 3.

Lee Wurzel, 29, was charged Wednesday with felony theft.

Farmington police had released a photo of Wurzel to the media that showed him with two shopping carts filled with merchandise he did not pay for as he left the Wilton Road store.

Wurzel went into the store with his girlfriend on a Saturday night. They spent more than an hour filling three carts, Farmington police Sgt. Edward Hastings IV said.

They went to the checkout register, where there was a discussion about payment for the items, he said.

Wurzel indicated someone else was coming to pay and left the store with two of the three carts of merchandise, Hastings said.

No one came to pay for the items and the third cart was left at the register, he said.

Police credited the public’s help in identifying Wurzel. Most of the items were recovered.
