ALFRED (AP) — A Rhode Island man has been sentenced to more than three years in prison after pleading guilty to driving drunk and causing a crash in Maine that killed his passenger.

Christopher Bennett of Johnston, R.I., was sentenced Thursday in York County Superior Court after pleading guilty to manslaughter and operating under the influence of alcohol in connection with the September 2012 crash in Biddeford that killed 20-year-old Anthony Ciccone, of Pepperell, Mass.

Authorities said the 21-year-old Bennett and Ciccone had gone to visit a friend at the University of New England, but left campus after causing a disturbance at a dorm.

Police say Bennett was speeding when his SUV struck a utility pole. Ciccone died at the hospital.

Bennett was also fined $2,100 and lost his license for 10 years.
