NEWRY (AP) — A couple from Finland have won cash, beer and bragging rights in capturing the 14th annual North American Wife Carrying Championship at Maine’s Sunday River ski resort.
Five-time world champion Taisto Miettinen and Rita Sairanen won Saturday’s contest by finishing the 278-yard course in just over 48 seconds.
For their effort, they won Sairanen’s weight in beer and five times her weight in cash, which amounted to $445. They also gain entry into the world wife-carrying championship, which takes place in Finland next summer.
Miettinen has won the world championship five times, but with a different teammate.
In wife-carrying races, a man must carry a female teammate over course with a series of obstacles.
