AUBURN — A man stole two engagement rings from a local jewelry store midmorning Thursday and pawned them in Lewiston, police said.

Investigators are working to confirm the suspect’s identity.

Tom Cunliffe, owner of Goldworks jewelry store at 33 Center St., said the man asked to see engagement rings. One of the saleswomen showed him two rings. He asked what size they were, then bolted from the store with the rings worth about $7,000, Cunliffe said.

The man ran across Center Street and likely got into a car that sped to Lewiston Pawn Shop. He pawned the rings for $1,000, Cunliffe said.

Police were able to see the man on surveillance video and took fingerprints at the jewelry store, Cunliffe said.

A detective interviewed the manager at Lewiston Pawn Shop as short time later.

Police Deputy Chief Jason Moen said police were working to identify the suspect.
