THOMASTON — Carol Bachofner, poet laureate of Rockland, will be the featured speaker at the Saturday, Nov. 2, meeting of Maine Media Women, at the American Legion Hall, beginning at 9:15 a.m. with coffee and networking. The program will begin at 10.

Bachofner is well-known in the area for her books of poetry, including “I Write in the Greenhouse” and “Breakfast at the Brass Compass,” and often does readings at local bookstores and libraries.

But this past summer, she turned her energy into organizing a three-day “writing camp” for children in grades 3 through 5. Assisted by several other professional writers who volunteered as instructor/coaches, and with financial support from sponsors (Maine Media Women among them), the camp was held the last week of July and was attended by a number of budding young writers from the Rockland-Thomaston area. There are plans to expand the program for the summer of 2014.

Bachofner will describe the activities of the camp and read some of the stories and poems created by the students who participated. One of the students will also be there to read her own work.

All MMW meetings are open to the public, and guests are always welcome. Suggested donations is $3 for members, $5 for guests.
