RUMFORD —  Students at Mountain Valley and Dirigo high schools have an opportunity to learn leadership skills and provide community service. Thanks to the River Valley Rotary Club, plans are being made to re-establish the River Valley Interact Club.

According to the Interact handbook, “Interact is a service club for youth ages 14 to 18. Clubs benefit from sponsorship by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance. Interact’s name is a combination of the words international and action.”

Rotarian Crystal McAtee and math teacher Sarah Knowlton provided a pizza lunch for students who joined them in the library. Following the lunch, the women explained Interact and asked the students to indicate their interest.

There is interest.

Sophomore Natasha Munzer said, “What interests me most about the Interact Club would be helping people hands-on, and giving back to the community. Another thing that interests me about Interact is building my leadership skills. I’m in multiple clubs which include Peer Helpers and Big Brother/Big Sisters. I’m also going to be filling out an application to be a class officer. I love to help people and I was curious about Interact and I think I will fit in perfectly in the group.”

Sophomore Hannah Koch is also interested but had a concern. “I would like to do it, but I am concerned about having enough time. I am active in gymnastics and want to maintain good grades,” she said.

“I think it’s a great way to help the community and make the world a better place,” sophomore Kayla Sinclair added. “I would like to get more information from Facebook.”

This would not be the first Interact Club. Several years ago, MVHS and Dirigo students participated in community service through Interact.
