WASHINGTON (AP) — Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine says the conference committee aimed at coming up with a fiscal plan is “one of our last chances” to show the American people that Congress can govern.

King made his remarks Wednesday on the floor of the Senate, telling his colleagues that “it’s almost less important what’s in the deal than that there be a deal” to show Congress can compromise.

King is part of the House and Senate conference committee that aims to create a long-term budget plan by Dec. 13 to avert another government shutdown. The 29-member conference committee came about as a result of the last-minute agreement to reopen the government and lift the debt ceiling.

King said that a budget compromise that’s signed by the president would “electrify the country.”
