BANGOR — Police arrested a local man suspected of making a threatening phone call to Eastern Maine Healthcare Mall on Union Street Thursday morning.
Bangor police Sgt. Catherine Rumsey said in a press release the facility’s switchboard received a phone call about 9:31 a.m. that was considered threatening. She did not disclose the nature of the threat.
In response to the call, officers visited the facility, and employee entrances were locked, according to EMHS communications director Suzanne Spruce.
Spruce said patient entrances remained open with higher security, and appointments and health care services continued as scheduled.
“The safety and security of our patients, visitors and staff is always our top priority,” Spruce said in a statement. “Anytime a comment or action is made that could be viewed as a threat we take immediate measures to ensure safety. We apologize to those who may have been inconvenienced today and thank them for their patience and understanding. We also thank the Bangor police for their swift action and bringing closure so that we could resume normal operations.”
Bangor police and EMHS staff identified Kip Reischman, 56, of Bangor as a suspect. He was placed under arrest and charged with terrorizing, a Class C crime, and was transported to Penobscot County Jail, Rumsey said.
According to the police press release, the incident is considered isolated and there is no threat to public safety. Patients are advised that it is safe to attend appointments scheduled for Thursday.
