AUBURN — A local man was behind bars on drug charges Thursday night after his apartment on Newbury Street was hit by at least a dozen bullets Wednesday night.

Police arrested 26-year-old Gary Wallace, who police say had been living in the first-floor apartment at 14 Newbury St. that was struck by gunfire at about 8:15 p.m.

Wallace was charged with aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs and possession of marijuana. Investigators said they found crack cocaine, pot and nearly $3,500 in drug proceeds in the apartment.

No one was hurt by the gunshots, but several neighbors were rattled. Slugs punched holes in windows, the door and walls at the front of the apartment house that sits behind the Big Apple store.

Neighbors said a woman lives inside the apartment with her children, but that people were frequently seen visiting the apartment at all hours. Police said Wallace also lived at the apartment.

Police and drug agents were continuing to investigate the shooting. Auburn police Deputy Chief Jason Moen said witnesses described a blue SUV that was driven away from Newbury Street seconds after the shooting.

The shooter has not yet been identified.

Wallace remained at the Androscoggin County Jail where he was being held on $15,000 cash bail.
