WESTBROOK — A kitten that was put in a microwave in Maine when it was 8 weeks old has been given a new home.
Mary Byram of Scarborough will take home Miracle after winning a lottery held by the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.
Two 15-year-old South Portland girls have been charged with animal cruelty after police found a roughly 10-second video of the kitten being put in the microwave on Twitter in September.
The video shows one girl put the kitten in the microwave, close the door and appear to turn it on. Police weren’t sure how long it was on.
The girls’ names haven’t been released because of their age.
WCHS-TV reports that hundreds of people from around the world contacted the shelter hoping to take home the kitten.
