AUGUSTA (AP) — State transportation and wildlife officials are urging motorists to be careful because of a rebound in the deer population and the fact it’s mating season.
About a third of the state’s deer died during the 2008-09 winter, but the population has bounced back to about 200,000, according to a state biologist.
November is also when deer are mating and on the move.
Officials told the Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/181Ve6V) that to minimize the risk, drivers should drive more slowly in areas with deer crossing signs, use high beams when possible and remain aware of their surroundings.
Waldo County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Trafton said his department has dealt with 45 deer collisions in 31 days alone.
The number of vehicle collisions involving deer is 2,600 to 3,000 a year.
