GRAY — The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for southern Oxford, southern Franklin and southern Somerset counties in Maine Tuesday evening. 

Those areas are expected to experience freezing rain, sleet and snow. The advisory is in effect from 7 p.m to 8 a.m. Wednesday, according the National Weather Service.

“Low pressure tracking up the East Coast will begin to spread precipitation into northern New England tonight. Precipitation will likely start as snow before transitioning to rain through the night. A period of freezing rain is expected in interior locations where cold air hangs on longer near the surface. Precipitation should change to rain area wide by Wednesday morning.”

Cities to be affected include Rumford, Norway, Fryeburg, Oxford, Farmington, Wilton, Madison, Skowhegan, and Pittsfield.

Snow could accumulate of up to an inch in addition to about a 10th of an inch of ice.

This comes after a tricky morning for Maine commuters Tuesday. More than 100 crashes and fender benders were reported in southern Maine after snow and ice covered the roads.

The interstate speed limit was temporarily lowered to 45 miles per hour and tow trucks and police officers busily went from one crash to the next.

Police reported cars sliding into trees, into one another or off the road. None of the crashes reported were particularly severe.

The National Weather Service is advising that people avoid the roads during the evening precipitation. Drivers should exercise extra caution. Expect slippery roads and limited visibility.
