OXFORD — A Gardiner man remained behind bars Thursday night after being arrested twice in two days on charges of shoplifting liquor from Hannaford supermarkets in Oxford and Auburn.

Robert O. Richard, 25, was taken into custody at the Route 26 store at around 5 p.m. Wednesday, after he was caught attempting to leave with two bottles of Hennessy Cognac, Oxford police Sgt. Alan Coffin said.

Richard was charged with theft, criminal trespass and violation of bail conditions, all class E misdemeanor offenses.

In an email Thursday, Auburn police Deputy Chief Jason Moen said Richard was arrested Tuesday on a charge of shoplifting a bottle of Hennessy Cognac from the Hannaford store in that city. He was booked at the Androscoggin County Jail.

Moen said police also served Richard with a trespass notice barring him from Hannaford stores. Richard violated the order by entering and being arrested at the Oxford location, he said.

Richard was booked at the Oxford County Jail in Paris with bail set at $1,000 cash.
