DIXFIELD — Dylan Kidder led all scorers with 17 for the Dirigo as the Cougars topped Winthrop 63-53 in an MVC boys’ basketball powerhouse matchup.

Gavin Arsenault had six steals along with 11 points to give the Cougars (1-0) the edge. Jacob Hickey led the Ramblers (0-1) with 15 points and three 3-pointers on the day.

Morse 64, Leavitt 47

TURNER — Jacob Freeman erupted for 20 points to lead Morse to a 64-47 victory over Leavitt in boys’ varsity basketball action Friday.

Morse got off to a quick start, leading at the half by 13. Ethan Winglass added in 14 points for the Shipbuilders (1-0). Zac Goulette tallied a team-high 13 points for Leavitt (0-1).

Valley 61, Buckfield 39

BINGHAM — Valley had three players tally a double double, as it dominated Buckfield 61-39 in a boys’ basketball opening-day game Friday.

Collin Miller grabbed 10 boards to go along with 19 points, which led all scorers. Dylan Belanger and Teagan Staples supplied 14 points a piece for the Cavaliers offense, while grabbing 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

Jordan Gillespie had nine assists to go along with five points for Valley, while J. Eastman led Buckfield with 11 points.

Poland 64, Freeport 45

POLAND — CJ Martin recorded a team-high 17 points to lead Poland to a 64-45 victory over Freeport in boys’ basketball action Friday evening.

The Knights (1-0) took a 20-1 margin in the second quarter, the difference in the final outcome. Alan Young contributed seven field goals for 14 points for Poland.

Chandler Birmingham nailed down 17 points for the Falcons (0-1) on five field goals, including a 3-pointer and four free throws.

Girls’ basketball

St. Dom’s 58, Lisbon 38

LISBON FALLS — Kelly Pomerleau was on top of her game leading all scorers with 23 points, as St. Dom’s rolled past Lisbon 58-38 in an opening-day MVC girls’ basketball game.

Callie Greco supplied the Saints with 19 points on the day, while Faith Grady had 7 and Olivia Mayo finished with six. Katelyn Fowler and Adrianna White led the Greyhound scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Gray-New Gloucester 54, Greely 31

GRAY — Maria Valente had a game-high 24 points to go along with seven rebounds and six steals as she powered Gray-New Gloucester to a 54-31 win over Greely in a WMC girls’ basketball matchup.

Grace Ferguson tallied eight points to go along with Valente in the effort for the Patriots (1-0). Moira Train led the Rangers (0-1) with nine points while Jordynne Copp tallied eight on the night.

Hall-Dale 57, Telstar 37

BETHEL — Juniors Nicole Pelletier and Molly French combined for 22 points as Hall-Dale ran past Telstar 57-37 in a girls’ MVC basketball matchup.

Dani Sweet and Eva Sheperd had nine and eight points for the Bulldogs (1-0) in the effort. Tori Ryerson and Becca Howard netted 12 points a piece for the Rebels who move to 0-1 on the season.

Rangeley 50, Richmond 30

RANGELEY — Senior point guard Tori Letarte scored a game-high 19 points to lead Rangeley to a 50-30 triumph over Richmond in EWC girls’ basketball action Friday evening.

The Lakers (1-0) were also powered by Taylor Esty and Blayke Morin with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Sophomore forward Kelsea Anair tossed a team-high six points for the Bobcats (0-1).

Mtn. Valley 45, Mt. Abram 13

SALEM — Sydney Petrie drained a game-high 15 points as Mountain Valley soared to a 45-13 victory over Mt. Abram in MVC girls’ basketball action Friday evening.

The Falcons (1-0) scored nine unanswered points in the first quarter and took a 21-3 halftime lead.

Junior forward Brooke Millbury netted a team-high four points on a field goal and a pair of free throws for the Roadrunners (0-1).

Dirigo 71, Winthrop 6

DIXFIELD — Junior forward Kelsey Hutchins poured in 16 points to lead Dirigo to a 71-6 victory over Winthrop in MVC girls’ basketball action Friday evening.

The Cougars (1-0) were quick and smothering as they jumped out to a 19-2 first quarter lead. Megan Bradury pitched in with nine points.

Shie Smith found the basket twice to post a team-leading four points for the Ramblers (0-1).
